Developing CiA documents

CiA Interest Groups (IG) and its related Special Interest Groups (SIG) develop all CiA technical documents. It starts always with a New Work Item Proposal and ends normally in the release of a Public Available Specification (PAS) or a Technical Report (TR).
The detailed development process is available here.
There is a defined development process adapted from international standardization bodies. Documents in public-available state can be downloaded free-of-charge also by non-members from this website.
CiA Technical Committee
The permanent Technical Committee (TC) members are elected annually by the General Assembly and each Interest Groups (IG) nominates additional members. The TC coordinates the technical work of all CiA technical groups, in order to avoid double specifications. In addition, the TC ratifies all public available CiA technical documents.
Contributors are welcome
CiA members may participate in any technical group. They just need to register at the CiA office. But also not-registered members may comment any CiA document during the entire development process.
Glossary of terms
CiA provides the glossary of terms to support a common understanding of terms and definitions in the CAN application field.
CiA working groups can refer to these terms. Proposals for missing terms are highly appreciated and can be submitted to secretary(at)can-cia.org.
IG CANopen
The Interest Group (IG) CANopen coordinates its Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and related Task Forces (TF). It approves Draft Specification (DS) documents developed by SIGs and TFs. The group is responsible for the CiA 3XX series, especially CiA 301. Details on current work items and next meetings are provided here.
IG CANopen FD
The Interest Group (IG) CANopen FD coordinates its Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and related Task Forces (TF). It approves Draft Specification (DS) documents developed by SIGs and TFs. The group is responsible for the CiA 13XX series, especially CiA 1301. Details on current work items and next meetings are provided here.
IG profiles
The Interest Group (IG) profiles establishes and coordinates Special Interest Groups (SIGs). It approves Draft Specification (DS) documents developed by SIGs. The IG is responsible for the CiA 4XX series comprising device, application, and interface profiles as well as mappings to classic CANopen, CANopen FD, and other higher-layer protocols such as J1939. Details on current work items and next meetings are provided here.
IG lower layers
The Interest Group (IG) lower layers accompanies the international standardization of the CAN FD protocol (ISO 11898 series) and other data link layer and physical layer add-on specifications. This includes implementation guidelines and application notes. The group is responsible for the CiA 601 series and CiA 603. Details on current work items and next meetings are provided here.
IG J1939
The Interest Group (IG) J1939 discusses and comments J1939-based documents. This includes the SAE J1939 series, the ISO 11783 series (also known as Isobus), DIN 4630, and IEC 61162-3 (also known as Nema 2000). CiA staff forwards comments and new feature requests on behalf of this group to the responsible associations. Details on current work items and next meetings are provided here.
IG safety/security
The Interest Group (IG) safety/security coordinates all CiA specifications on functional safety and cybersecurity. These activities are Classical CAN-related or CAN FD-related and may cover also higher-layer protocols including CANopen (FD) and J1939-based solutions. Details on current work items and next meetings are provided here.
IG high‑availability
The Interest Group (IG) high-availability develops and maintains concepts for mission-critical CAN-based networks. This covers different redundancy concepts such as device, bus-line, or system redundancy for CAN-based applications. Details on current work items and next meetings are provided here.
